Professor Ioanna Gouni-Berthold is an Internist, Endocrinologist and Head of the Lipid Clinic and Lipid Research Clinic at the Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Preventive Medicine at the University of Cologne, Germany.
She received her training at prestigious Universities such as the Harvard Medical School and Baylor College of Medicine. Professor Gouni-Berthold is recognised nationally and internationally as a distinguished expert in the diagnosis and treatment of dyslipidemias. She is the Vice President and President Elect of the German, Austrian and Swiss Society for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases (dach-praevention.eu).
Professor Gouni-Berthold’s major research interests have focussed on genetically determined hyperlipidemias including familial hyperchylomicronemia syndrome, heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia and elevated lipoprotein(a). As a Steering Committee member, she has made seminal contributions to several major cardiovascular trials involving third generation lipid lowering agents such as monoclonal antibodies, siRNAs, and antisense oligonucleotides (ASO); these trials include FOURIER, GAUSS-3, Rutherford-2 and COMPASS. The Lipid Clinic led by Prof Gouni-Berthold has led global patient recruitment in the first outcome trial of an ASO targeting Lipoprotein(a), HORIZON(a).
She is a member of a number of National and International Societies and serves in the editorial boards of multiple international Journals, such as “Metabolism”, “Current Vascular Pharmacology” and “Pharmaceuticals”.
Prof. Gouni-Berthold has received numerous awards, the latest being the 2023 Award of the German Society of Cardiology for Clinical Lipid Research, and her research has been published in Journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet and JAMA. Her work has been quoted in more than 8.700 publications.
Finally, Professor Gouni-Berthold has contributed nationally and internationally to educational programmes in the pathophysiology and management of lipid disorders.
